Crowd in US state of Wisconsin turns violent after fatal shooting

A crowd gathered at a crime scene in the US state of Wisconsin turned violent late Saturday night after a man was fatally shot by a police officer, the local Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The crowd reportedly threw stones at police, while firefighters could not immediately quell a fire set at a fuel station due to gunshots, according to the Milwaukee Police Department's Twitter account.

At least 200 people were involved in the disturbances, local police official James Harpole said at a midnight (0500 GMT Sunday) press conference.

Khalif Rainey, a local alderman, said at the press conference that the shooting and violence pointed to the mounting tension between Milwaukee's black community and police.

"No one can deny the fact that there's problems, racial problems, here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that have to be closely, not examined, but rectified. Rectify this immediately," said Rainey, who represents the area where the man was shot, according to the Journal Sentinel.

Earlier Saturday, a 23-year-old Milwaukee man armed with a semiautomatic handgun was shot by an officer during a foot pursuit and died from his injuries at the scene, a police statement said.

The officer involved would be on administrative duty while the incident was being investigated, the statement added.
