Clinton gains 5-point lead over Trump following debate

Democrat Hillary Clinton has gained a five-point lead over her Republican rival Donald Trump after last week's first presidential debate, according to an opinion poll published Monday.

Clinton led Trump by 47 per cent to 42 per cent among likely voters, the CNN/ORC poll said, with most of her gains apparently coming from men and independents.

The Democratic candidate had cut her deficit among men to 5 points from a 22-point deficit in early September, while independents now favour her by 44 per cent to Trump's 37 per cent, the poll said.

Around six out of 10 voters said Clinton had done the better job in the September 27 debate, with just a quarter saying the same of Trump.

The survey, which CNN said was mostly completed before a New York Times report on Saturday that Trump may have avoided paying any income tax for almost 20 years, also showed that 57 per cent of people thought his refusal to release his tax returns indicated he was hiding something.

The poll surveyed 1,501 people, including 1,213 likely voters, between Wednesday and Sunday and had a 3-percentage point margin of error among likely voters.
