China hit by worst cold snap in decades

China was heading for record low temperatures, meteorologists warned Sunday, as authorities renewed an orange alert for severe weather.

In Beijing, temperatures were expected to hit a 30-year low of minus 16 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the National Meteorological Center said.

Temperatures in the south-eastern provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong may drop below the lowest levels ever recorded, it said.

In northern China, the weather dropped 10 to 13 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning, while central and eastern China saw temperatures 6 to 8 degrees Celsius lower than the average historical level.

Residents in Hong Kong, more accustomed to the territory's subtropical climate, were shivering in 3-degree weather under cold sleet on Sunday.

The country's four-tier weather warning system has red as the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

In China's Inner Mongolia region, temperatures dropped to minus 47.5 degrees Celsius. China's state broadcaster carried pictures of boiling water instantly turning to frozen vapour when thrown into the cold air.
