British tourist admits to bashing Bali policeman in murder case

A British man detained in connection with the death of a policeman on Indonesia's resort island of Bali has admitted to hitting the officer with a beer bottle and binoculars, media reports said Tuesday.

David Taylor and his Australian girlfriend Sara Connor were named suspects after local policeman Wayan Sudarsa was found dead on a beach on the Kuta tourist strip with wounds to his head on Wednesday.

Taylor's lawyer Haposan Sihombing told reporters that the Briton had approached Sudarsa because he suspected that the officer had stolen Connor's wallet while they were together on the beach, Detik.com reported.

In the fight that ensued, Taylor hit Sudarsa with a beer bottle, binoculars and a mobile phone and left him lying on the beach after the policeman stopped moving, Sihombing said.

"As (Taylor) was sitting on the policeman's back, Sara tried to separate them," Sihombing said late Monday after Taylor had been questioned for 12 hours, according to Detik.com.

"Our client regrets what happened in the early hours of August 17th," the lawyer said.

Bali police spokesman Made Sudana told dpa that "they have both confessed," but declined to give any further detail.

Sihombing could not immediately be reached for further comment.
