The alleged hijacker who diverted EgyptAir Flight 181 to Cyprus had a criminal record for forgery and was also suspected in a number of fraud, theft and narcotics cases, Egypt's Interior Ministry says.
The alleged hijacker, Seif al-Din Mustafa, and his carry-on baggage had both been subject to full security checks at Alexandria's Borg al-Arab Airport but he had later assembled his fake explosive belt from permitted personal belongings in the bag, the ministry says.
The ministry published surveillance camera footage of Mustafa going through the security checks, and a photograph of the x-ray of his carry-on bag, on its Facebook page to back up its statement.
