Aftershocks jolt Japan as death toll from two quakes rises to 47

A series of aftershocks rattled the southern Japanese island of Kyushu on Tuesday as the number of deaths from the twin powerful earthquakes rose to 47.

In Minamiaso village, where the quakes had triggered landslides, three bodies were recovered, while rescue workers continued to search for eight people who were still missing, broadcaster NHK reported.

Residents in the quake-hit areas on Kyushu remained worried as aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 5.8 on Tuesday afternoon, continued to rock the region.

The Meteorological Agency said that about 630 aftershocks had shaken Kyushu since a magnitude-6.5 quake struck Kumamoto on Thursday evening, killing nine people. At least 38 people died in the second quake with a magnitude of 7.3, which hit the same region early Saturday.

About 100,000 evacuees were forced to spend the night in schools, gymnasiums and community centers. Some people also stayed in their cars as shelters were overcrowded, or because they were worried about aftershocks.

Healthcare workers were advising evacuees to get some exercise as Japanese media reported on Tuesday that a 51-year-old woman in Kumamoto, who had spent nights in a car, died after developing deep vein thrombosis. At least 23 people had developed the dangerous blood clots, local Kumamoto Nichinichi newspaper reported.

The quakes prompted the closure of sections of some expressways and the suspension of local train services, including high speed bullet trains.

Toyota Motor and other manufacturers suspended their production.
