Afghan forces retake control of district in northern Afghanistan

Afghan forces late Saturday retook control of a district that fell to the Taliban on Saturday morning in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz, said officials on Sunday.

Afghan forces were able to retake control of Khanabad district center from Taliban who had hoisted their flag in the center of the town, said Mawlawi Abdullah, a provincial council member from Kunduz.

Kunduz is one of the most volatile provinces in the north, with its capital Kunduz city briefly falling to the Taliban last year. At least four districts are now either fully or in large parts controlled by the insurgents.

Taliban destroyed a key bridge connecting 3 districts - Imam Sahib, Dasht-e Archi, and Qal-e Zal - and Tajikistan to Kunduz. The bridge is closed to traffic, according to Hejratullah Akbari, the police spokesman for Kunduz.

According to Mawlawi Abdullah, some high-profile prisoners were transfered from Kunduz's main and only prison to the airport, where Afghan forces held territory the last time Kunduz city fell to the Taliban.

The Taliban also intensified attacks in Kunduz on Saturday by staging attacks in Alibad district, but were pushed back, police officials said.

"There is only fighting in Aliabad highway, the district center is calm at the moment," Hejratullah Akbari, the Kunduz police spokesman said.
