60 dead as suicide bombers target refugee camp in northern Nigeria

At least 60 people were killed when two suicide bombers detonated explosives in a camp for internally displaced people in north eastern Nigeria, relief workers said Wednesday.

The attacks were carried out by two teenage girls in Dikwa, 90 kilometres north-east of Maiduguri in Borno state, while hundreds of people who were standing in line to collect food, one relief worker, who asked to remain anonymous, told dpa.

"Fifty-two persons were given mass burial in Dikwa while several other corpses were transported to Madiguri," he said.

A third attacker who infiltrated the camp was arrested before she could detonate her device.

Dikwa provides sanctuary for thousands of people who have been displaced by attacks carried out by Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram.

News of the incident emerged only late Wednesday, as Boko Haram has destroyed all telephone facilities around Dikwa.

An official of the National Emergency Management Agency told dpa that 78 people sustained "various degrees of injuries" in the attack.

"Three female suicide bombers entered Dikwa, which houses over 50,000 people displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency," the official said.

Earlier Wednesday, at least 11 people were killed and 20 injured after suicide bombers targeted a wake in northern Cameroon.

The attack in the locality of Nguetchewe in Cameroon's far north region bordering Nigeria was carried out by two female suicide bombers.

Nigeria-based Boko Haram, which seeks to implement its own radical version of Islam, has killed thousands in north-eastern Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad since 2009.
