17 soldiers and 4 militants killed in Indian Kashmir army base attack

Seventeen soldiers and four assailants were killed Sunday in an attack by suspected militants on an army base in Indian-administered Kashmir, the Indian Army said.

A small group of suspected militants attempted to storm the Indian Army's 12th brigade headquarters at Uri in Kashmir's Baramullah district early Sunday.

The base is located near the Line of Control, a military frontier that divides the disputed Kashmir region into two parts, one administered by India and the other by Pakistan.

"In the counter-action, four terrorists have been eliminated and combing operations are in progress," an army statement said.

At least 25 army personnel were injured.

A large number of troops were stationed at the base, with a battalion that had returned from field duties handing over to another one.

The troops were quartered in temporary tents and shelters that caught fire during the attack, resulting in heavy casualties, the statement said.

The injured soldiers were airlifted to Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir state.
