Croatia records strong rise in tourism nights in 2015

The number of tourism nights in the European Union in 2015 reached a new record and Croatia was among the member states with the highest rise in nights and the highest rise in the nights spent by non-residents, the EU statistical office Eurostat said on Tuesday.

In 2015, the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the EU is expected to have reached a new record level of around 2.8 billion nights, up by 3.2% compared with 2014. Since 2009, there has been a steady increase in that number, notably driven by the rise in the nights spent by non-residents.

In 2015, Spain (421 million nights, +4.3% compared with 2014) reinforced its top position in terms of tourism nights.

Croatia recorded 71.3 million nights, including 65.7 million by foreigners. The number of nights was 7.9% higher than in 2014, ranking Croatia among the member states with the highest rise in nights compared with 2014.

After Malta (96%) and Cyprus (94%), the highest shares of nights spent by non-residents in 2015 were registered in Croatia (92%), Greece (79%) and Austria (71%).

In Croatia, the number of non-resident tourism nights in 2015 increased by 7.6% compared with 2014. At 65.7 million, Croatia accounted for 5.2% of non-resident tourism nights in the EU28.

Croatia was also among the member states with the highest rise in resident tourism nights in 2015, up 11.6% from 2014. Only Romania and the Czech Republic recorded higher growths, 15.3% and 15% respectively.
