Wawrinka outlasts Djokovic to claim US Open title

Stan Wawrinka bullied his way to a third career grand slam title on Sunday as he outlasted Novak Djokovic 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 to win the US Open final on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Swiss added the New York crown to his 2014 Australian Open title - he beat Djokovic in the quarter-finals - and the Roland Garros trophy from last season, where he defeated the world number one Serb in the final.

Wawrinka has now won his last 11 finals dating to early 2014; his victory lifts his record over Djokovic to 5-19.

Djokovic was treated twice for blister and toenail problems, which he said were painfully limiting his movement.

Wawrinka came to the final with 18 hours on court while Djokovic - thanks to three retirements and a walkover - had played for only nine hours.

The Serb world number one stands 2-5 in US Open finals after losing to Wawrinka in just under four hours of battle. He has stalled on a dozen grand slam titles.
