Wales held by Georgia, wins for Ukraine, Croatia in WC qualifiers

Wales dropped points in their bid for World Cup qualification when they were held 1-1 by Georgia in Cardiff on Sunday.

Gareth Bale headed Wales ahead in the 13th minute from a Joe Ledley corner but Georgia levelled eight minutes into the second half when Tornike Okriashvili drifted in at the far post to head in from Valeri Kazaishvili's cross.

Georgia also hit the bar and had the better of the chances in the second half to earn a deserved first point after two defeats.

Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales now have five points from three games in Group D but could lose ground when Serbia play Austria, and Moldova meet Ireland in matches later Sunday.

Wales manager Chris Coleman said: "Against Georgia at home, you have got to take three points but it means the next game against Serbia here there is more pressure to get three points. We have to deal with that."

Midfielder Dave Edwards said: "We are bitterly disappointed. We went away from what we know best and were all over the place at times. That is down to the players and it is definitely two points dropped."

Ukraine and Croatia both chalked up wins in Group I.

In Tampere, Finland, Mario Mandzukic struck an 18th-minute winner for Croatia against the home side to stay top of the group.

Ukraine earned their first win after two draw when they beat Kosovo 3-0 in Krakow thanks to a first-half own goal by Amir Rrahmani and late goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Ruslan Rotan.

Iceland were up against Turkey in the group later Sunday.

In Group G in Jerusalem, Tomer Hemed scored two early goals as Israel defeated Liechtenstein 2-1.

Spain were at group leaders Albania, while Italy were at Macedonia in matches later in the day in the group.
