Russian rhythmic gymnastics team earn fifth Olympic victory in a row

Russia delivered on their favourite role in rhythmic gymnastics Sunday when they won the team final to earn their fifth consecutive Olympic Gold medal.

The Russians, who have not been beaten since the 2000 Sydney Games, had trailed Spain and Bulgaria after their ribbon performance.

However, they saved gold with their clubs and hoops, for a total score of 36.233.

Spain and Bulgaria were tied with 35.766 points each. Spain won silver, while Bulgaria took home bronze.

Russia has also continued its domination of the past 16 years in the individual rhythmic gymnastics event.

Margarita Mamun secured Russia its fifth consecutive gold in the event on Saturday, ahead of her compatriot Yana Kudryavtseva and Ukraine's Ganna Rizatdinova.
