Russia stays suspended from athletics, IAAF says

Russia has not done enough on anti-doping reforms to have its suspension from world athletics lifted, athletics governing body IAAF said Friday.

IAAF president Sebastian Coe Russia said "should not be reinstated at this stage."

A final decision on whether Russia should be readmitted in time for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August will be taken by the IAAF council in May.

Friday's decision by the IAAF council after a two-day meeting had been expected.

Russia Sport Minister Vitaly Mutko had said earlier Friday he did not expect the IAAF to lift the country's ban from competing in the near future.

There was no "revolutionary solution" in sight which would lift the ban, Mutko said in Moscow.

One of the reasons for this is the recent spate of Russian sportspeople testing positive for meldonium, most notably tennis star Maria Sharapova, after the medicine was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned list in January.

The Russian federation ARAF was last November suspended from the IAAF following a report from a WADA commission of systematic doping and cover-ups of positive doping tests in the country. The nation's anti-doping agency RUSADA was also suspended.

Russian athletes are suspended from all events and could miss the Olympics in Rio unless the ban is lifted.

This depends on the Russian federation meeting a number of conditions to bring in stricter anti-doping controls and removing those previously involved in corruption.

The 27-strong IAAF council Friday studied a report from the task force investigating the reform programme being carried out by ARAF.

Coe meanwhile said that Ethiopia, Morocco, Kenya, Ukraine and Belarus are in "critical care" by the IAAF over their anti-doping programmes.
