Rooney says he'll quit international football after 2018 World Cup

England captain Wayne Rooney said Tuesday that he'll retire from international football after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The 30-year-old was retained as captain by new manager Sam Allardyce on Monday.

"Come Russia I feel that will be the time to say goodbye to international football," England's record scorer with 53 goals told a news conference. “My mind is made up.

"I started playing international football at 17, so at 32, in two years time, I will have been playing at that level for 15 years and I think that is a good time to finish."

England start World Cup qualifying on Sunday in Slovakia and Rooney would pass David Beckham as England's most capped outfield player with 116 should he feature.

He said he hasn't spoken with Allardyce about which position he would play.

Previosu manager Roy Hodgson used him in midfield at Euro 2016 but he's played behind the striker at Manchester United this season.

"Obviously it's the manager's decision," Rooney said.

“We haven't really spoken about it - we will in the next couple of days.

“I'm ready to play whether it's midfield, number 10 or striker."
