Pizarro questionable for Werder's German Cup opener

Werder Bremen will likely be without Claudio Pizarro for their German Cup opener as the Bundesliga club said Saturday that the veteran forward suffered a left thigh injury.

Werder said the 37-year-old Pizarro will miss 7-10 days of action because of the injury, which happened at the team's training camp in Herzlake.

That leaves the Peruvian as questionable for Werder's first round encounter at third division side Sportfreunden Lotte on August 21.

"That is naturally bitter for Claudio. What is most important now is that he fully recovers from the injury and is then fit again for us," Werder coach Viktor Skripnik said.

Bremen kick off the new Bundesliga campaign on August 26 at reigning champs Bayern Munich.
