Nordic football associations propose Slovenian as UEFA president

Nordic football associations have agreed to propose Slovenia's Aleksander Ceferin as new president of European football's ruling body UEFA, they said Friday.

"We have the same interest to implement some reforms and have [a] common view about good governance of European and world football," the heads of the associations of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden said in a joint statement.

Karl-Erik Nilsson, president of the Swedish association, expected "more countries would follow suit," he told the association's website.

With Ceferin "we have a chance to start afresh," he added.

The Nordic football chiefs have had several meetings with Ceferin.

Nilsson and his Danish counterpart Jesper Moller met Ceferin as recently as Monday when Sweden hosted Slovenia for a friendly as part of Euro 2016 preparations.

UEFA is due to decide on the post when suspended chief Michel Platini steps down in September,

Ceferin, 48, said in a statement he was "ready to take this responsibility" but wanted to discuss the proposal with other national associations at a June 8 meeting in Moscow.
