Ireland secure final Euro 2016 berth in last 16; Turkey out

Ireland stole the final last 16 berth at Euro 2016 for third-place finishers from Turkey on Wednesday, joining Slovakia, Portugal and Northern Ireland.

Robbie Brady's 84th-minute winner against Italy secured a meeting with hosts France on Sunday in Lyon for Ireland.

Slovakia and Northern Ireland had secured their spots as third-place finishers on Tuesday, with Portugal following earlier Wednesday from a 3-3 draw against Hungary with the help of a double from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal, who advanced with three draws, noew face Croatia and Slovakia play Germany. The Irish victory meanwhile means that Northern Ireland face Wales.

Turkey and Albania were the two third-placed teams who failed to advance from the six groups, joining bootom sides Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Sweden and Austria on the sidelines.

The other last 16 matches are Switzerland v Poland, Hungary v Belgium, Italy v Spain and England v Iceland.
