Ilicic's brace lifts Fiorentina to the top in Serie A

Josip Ilicic scored a brace against his former team to help Fiorentina win 3-1 at Palermo and go top as the Italian Serie A league resumed after a two-week break.

La Viola lead on 38 points from 18 games, with Inter Milan, on 36, looking to regain first place later Wednesday at Empoli.

Champions Juventus beat bottom side Verona 3-0 for an eighth straight win and also have 36. Napoli are on 35 and were to close the day's round at home to Torino.

In Palermo, Slovenian striker Ilicic opened the scoring in the 13th minute and got his second three minutes before half-time with a low shot.

The Sicily hosts brought on former Fiorentina veteran Alberto Gilardino, who pulled one back with a header in the 77th, but substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski secured La Viola's win in injury time.

At the Juventus Stadium, the champions went ahead early with a textbook curling free-kick from Paulo Dybala, who in the 45th also set up Leonardo Bonucci's header for a 2-0 lead. Simone Zaza came on and wrapped up matters eight minutes from time.

Fifth-place Roma squandered a 2-0 and 3-2 lead in a 3-3 draw at Chievo who earned a point from substitute Simone Pepe in the 85th.

Promoted Bologna surprised AC Milan 1-0 from Emanuele Giaccherini's winner, Udinese edged Atalanta 2-1, Sassuolo and Frosinone drew 2-2 while Lazio and Carpi played out a scoreless draw. Sampdoria beat Genoa 3-2 Tuesday.
