European lifting champ Zielinski out of Olympics for doping

Polish weightlifting European champion and Olympic medal contender Tomasz Zielinski has been kicked out of the Rio Games for a positive doping test, his nation's Olympic Committee said Tuesday.

A statement said that the examination of the b-sample confirmed the original finding, with Zielinski testing positive for the steroid nandrolone at an out-of-competition test on July 31.

It is the first positive test within the Olympic testing period which started with the opening of the athletes village on July 24. The International Olympic Committee said it plans 5,500 tests during the Games.

The 94-kilo category lifter Zielinski, 26, has a gold from the 2016 European championships and a silver from the same event in 2014.

His brother, Adrian Zielinski, won 85kg lifting gold at the London 2012 Olympics and 2010 world championships.
