Croatians welcome handball bronze medalists

Several thousand supporters welcomed the Croatian national handball team in Zagreb's main Ban Josip Jelacic Square who had returned from Poland where they won the bronze medal at the European Championships.

This is Croatia's 13th medal at international competitions and the fifth at the European championships. The team won the bronze in 1994 in Portugal and again in 2012 in Serbia. In 2008 (Norway) and 2010 (Austria) the national team walked away with silver medals. Croatians are two-time Olympic champions (1996, 2004) and have once won the gold medal at the World Championships (2003). The only medal missing in this rich collection is the European gold.

"Thank you to everyone who has come here. This is indeed a beautiful story. We believed that these guys had something in them. We prepared them well, physically and mentally and we showed that," said Petar Metlicic, former national team player and assistant coach.

"I feel a lot of love here, thank you," coach Zeljko Babic said while captain Marko Kopljar added, "now it's time to rest up and celebrate and then to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro."
