Croatia celebrates conquest of Spain as "one of greatest wins"

Croatian online media hailed the triumph over Spain on Tuesday as “one of greatest wins” in its football history.

“That wonderful night in Bordeaux – Croatia toppled European champions,” 24Sata said. “Croatia outsmarted Spain and recorded one of the best wins in its history. Not even a penalty could help the La Furia. Rejoice with this great triumph,” it said.

The daily quoted keeper Danijel Subasic as saying that the sidelined Luka Modric tipped him, via captain Darijo Srna, where Sergio Ramos was likely to place the penalty. Modric and Ramos are teammates in Real Madrid.

“He told me to wait him out and dive to the right,” Subasic said.

The win triggered parties across the country, 24Sata said: “Crazy celebrations from Zagreb to Brod.”

Vecernji List praised “phenomenal Croatia” stressing that by turning the match around against European champs it claimed the first group place.

“Croatia entered the match partially relieved of pressure, knowing that they were certain to advance following Germany's win over North Ireland,” it estimated.

The portal said, "Kalinic, Subasic and Perisic take European champions down."

“Nikola Kalinic and Ivan Perisic scored goals and Danijel Subasic stopped a penalty for one of Croatia’s greatest triumphs in major tournaments,” it added.
