A glitch on Facebook briefly declared many of the social media site's users dead on Friday, including its founder Mark Zuckerberg, local media reported.
User profiles displayed a memorial banner at the top of the page which invited other users to "remember and celebrate" their lives.
"This was a terrible error that we have now fixed," a Facebook spokesperson said.
The cause of the bug was not known and it was unclear how many of Facebook's 1.8 billion users were affected.
Facebook allows users to turn their profiles into a memorial page upon their deaths where other users can post tributes.
