The Austrian police officer who was arrested last week for killing his family has told investigators that ongoing disputes with his pregnant girlfriend led him to shoot her and strangle their toddler son, police said Sunday.
The 23-year-old officer had confessed Friday that he had killed the two in their Vienna apartment and that he hid them 160 kilometres away in his home town, but he had not offered a motive or details of the crime.
Following further interrogation on the weekend, police stated: "The suspect said the motive was that there had been intense conflicts for months."
He alleged that the 25-year-old woman had assaulted him and locked him in the apartment, a police spokesman told Austrian press agency APA.
The officer said he had wanted to end the relationship last Sunday, triggering yet another quarrel which escalated to his shooting the woman, who was six months pregnant, with his police handgun. He then killed his one-year-old son.
He put the corpses in the trunk of his car and drove them to Trofaiach southwest of Vienna on Wednesday, where he disposed them on an overgrown plot of land.
