A Vienna police officer has killed his pregnant girlfriend and their small son in Vienna and hid their remains some 160 kilometres away in his home town, Austrian police said Friday.
The 23-year-old man has confessed the crime, which he committed in the Vienna apartment that he shared with his family, a police spokesman said.
The motive was unclear.
"During the interrogation he confessed that he killed the woman and the son. But then he stopped saying anything," the spokesman was quoted as saying by Austrian press agency APA.
The suspect was arrested in Styria province on Friday.
He led police to the remains of the victims, whom he had placed on a plot of land in his original home town of Trofaiach, some 160 kilometres from the Vienna crime scene.
The police officer had initially reported his family missing in Vienna early this week, claiming that his son and girlfriend, who was six months pregnant, had not returned after leaving the apartment.
He also planted false leads, by stating that his girlfriend had taken clothes for their son with her.
Austria's Interior Ministry paid respect to the family of the victims. "Our thoughts are with the relatives, and we are deeply shocked," the ministry said in a statement.
