US expects strong relationship with May

The US expects a strong working relationship with British Prime Minister Theresa May, White House spokesman Josh Earnest says in congratulating her on her new position.

The White House has confidence that May will "pursue a course that is consistent" with President Barack Obama's views on the need for a smooth and orderly transition as Britain leaves the European Union, Earnest says.

May, who previously served as home secretary, has worked closely in the past with US officials on security issues and they have "found her to be quite effective," Earnest says.
