UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will visit the Greek island of Lesbos next week where he will meet with refugees, migrants and asylum seekers, he told a press conference Thursday.
Ban said his visit to the island on June 18 comes in preparation of a high-level summit on migration at the sidelines the UN General Assembly in September, where UN member states will aim to find a solution for the continued flow of migrants into Europe.
"I have listened to the stories, hopes and fears of many refugees in recent months, to understand this challenge based on their first-hand experience," Ban said.
"Today I am announcing that I will visit the Greek island of Lesbos next week, to assess the situation and to show my solidarity."
On his trip, Ban will also visit Brussels, St Petersburg and Athens.
