Two police officers injured in Budapest blast

Two police officers were injured in an explosion in a popular entertainment district in Budapest, Hungarian authorities said Sunday.

Police are investigating the reason for the explosion, which injured one male and one female police officer who had been on patrol together.

The female officer reportedly suffered a head injury, while the male officer suffered a leg injury. Both were taken to hospital.

The culprits would be sought for attempted murder, police told local media.

The explosion occurred at 22:30 pm (2030 GMT Saturday) near the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, which is located in the heart of the Hungarian capital near numerous bars and restaurants.

There was no information regarding a possible motive for the explosion.

A nightclub very close by was the target of a bomb attack years ago linked to a dispute between rival gangs.
