The Turkish Foreign Ministry slams Germany's parliament for recognizing the Ottoman Empire's killing of Armenians as genocide, calling it a "disgrace" and pledging to take unspecified legal measures in response.
"This initiative of Germany constitutes an attempt to assimilate Turks and Germans of Turkish origin ... to alienate them from their own history and self-identity," the ministry continues in a statement.
Burhan Kuzu, a top member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), calls ethnic Turkish members of the German parliament who voted for the bill "traitors" and adds that they "should not set foot" back in Turkey.
"Germany was never an honest friend to us," Kuzu says on his Twitter feed, asking "Was Hitler a Turk?"
