Three Belgians charged with terrorism offenses after overnight raids

Authorities in Belgium have charged three suspects detained in a series of overnight anti-terrorism raids with attempted terrorist murder and participating in a terrorist organization, the public prosecutors' office in Brussels announced Saturday.

The men, all Belgian nationals aged 27, 29 and 40, were among 12 suspects arrested in the raids. The nine other detained suspects were released after being questioned.

The overnight raids were conducted in 16 municipalities, including in the Molenbeek area, in dozens of houses and garages, the prosecutor said. No weapons or explosives were found.

Some 40 people were taken in for questioning, including the 12 arrested.

Additional details were not immediately known.

Belgium kept its national terror warning level unchanged at the second highest Level 3, Prime Minister Charles Michel said. The unchanged status came as unconfirmed media reports suggested that extremists were planning new attacks on Belgium and France.

More than 30 people died on March 22, when suicide bombers attacked the Brussels international airport and an underground station in the Belgian capital. Several suspects have since been linked to the terrorist attacks in Paris in November in which 130 were killed.
