Syrian accused of throwing children out of window faces German court

A Syrian asylum seeker accused of trying to murder his three children by throwing them out of a window - amid a dispute with his wife about the proper roles of a man and wife - broke down in court Tuesday as the charges were read against him.

Prosecutors say the 35-year-old admitted to throwing his three children out of a first-storey window of their refugee accommodation in the western town of Lohmar bei Bonn on February 1.

The man's 7-year-old daughter was thrown out of the kitchen window. Her fall resulted in a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage.

His 5-year-old son, who was thrown out of the bathroom window, suffered skull and other bone fractures, while his infant daughter - who landed on her brother, breaking her fall - only sustained bruises and an internal contusion to the liver.

His lawyer told the court that he threw the children out the window. In an earlier statement, the prosecutor said the man had committed the crimes because his wife "no longer wanted to accept the gender roles customary in their home country."

He also expressed remorse about the crimes through his lawyer, Martin Kretschmer, who admitted that there had been an "ideological conflict" between the man and his wife.

The man fled from Syria in 2014 and came to Europe via the Western Balkan route. His family followed him shortly thereafter.

The court has scheduled six trial days and a verdict is expected on October 12.
