Strain over migrants shows as Athens recalls ambassador from Vienna

Greece recalled its ambassador to Vienna for consultations Thursday, another sign of relations growing strained amid the pressure of the migration crisis.

"Greece’s ambassador to Vienna ... is being called to Athens for consultations aimed at safeguarding the friendly relations between the states and peoples of Greece and Austria," the Foreign Ministry announced on its website.

That came a day after Austria hosted a Western Balkan conference on the migration crisis without inviting Greece, though tighter border controls directly affecting it were the outcome.

"Unilateral initiatives for resolving the refugee crisis, along with violations of international law and the European [agreements] by member states of the EU, are practices that can undermine the foundations and process of European integration," Greece says.
