Steinmeier says his party was overruled by Merkel in defamation case

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says his Social Democrats (SPD) were overruled by Chancellor Angela Merkel in their opposition to allowing criminal proceedings against a comedian who insulted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The SPD is the junior coalition partner in Merkel's government.
