Slovenian PM calls on migrants to be patient while waiting for asylum

Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar on Monday called on migrants and refugees demanding a faster processing of their asylum applications in Slovenia to be patient.

"I understand that they are somewhat upset with the procedure of receiving international protection, but I believe that the authorities are trying to accelerate the process and I too will see to it once I study the situation," Cerar told the press, asked to comment on events in an asylum centre in Ljubljana where some 30 refugees and migrants, mostly from Syria and Afghanistan, are protesting against lengthy procedures and poor living conditions.

The migrants in Ljubljana started the protest on Monday morning, asking for a meeting with the interior minister and the processing of their asylum applications.

According to official figures provided by the police, half a million migrants passed through Slovenia since the migrant wave spilled over there and until the Balkan migrant route was closed down in April.

A total of 952 persons have asked for international protection during that period. Currently, there are 297 migrants seeking asylum in Slovenia.
