Russia vows to defend against US missile system in Eastern Europe

Russia will take defensive measures against what it calls a US missile system in Eastern Europe, it vows, as NATO inaugurates a missile shield base in Romania.

"Since the very beginning of this, we have maintained that, in the opinion of our experts, the deployment of this missile system represents a threat to the Russian Federation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says in comments carried by state news agency TASS.

The US has claimed that the system is intended to protect NATO countries from a potential strike from Iran, but recently "the situation with Iran has cardinally changed," Peskov says.

The Iran issue, Peskov adds, "is losing its pertinence."
