Russia to deploy 10,000 more soldiers to west as situation unstable

Russia is deploying 10,000 more contract soldiers to the western part of the country as the situation there is unstable, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday.

"The military and political situation at the western borders remains unstable," the Interfax news agency reported Shoigu as telling a meeting of defence officials.

"The United States and other NATO member states continue to increase their military potential, primarily in countries neighbouring Russia," Shoigu added.

Russia has long condemned the Western military alliance's eastward expansion as a direct threat to Russia's national security.

Meanwhile, NATO countries have sought increased protection from the bloc after Russia occupied and annexed a part of neighbouring Ukraine two years ago.
