Rapist who escaped through beer hall toilet recaptured in Germany

A convicted rapist who made headlines in Germany after escaping from a beer hall toilet in the city of Cologne has been recaptured, the Justice Ministry in the western state of North-Rhine Westphalia said Saturday.

He was arrested in a bike shop in Bruehl, near Cologne, spokesman Detlef Feige said.

The 58-year-old convict had been on day parole in the western city of Cologne when his two guards took him into a beer hall to use the toilet earlier this week.

The convict went into the toilet cubicle and managed to sneak away unnoticed while one of the guards was using a urinal.

The two prison guards accompanying the man are facing a criminal investigation for letting the convict escape. The two guards failed to perform their official duties, according to the Justice Ministry.
