Rapist on the loose in Germany after escape through beer hall toilet

A convicted rapist is on the loose in Cologne after escaping through a beer hall toilet while his guard was relieving himself, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

The 58-year-old was on day parole in western German city when his two guards took him into a beer hall to use the toilet. The convict went into the toilet cubicle and managed to sneak away unnoticed while one of the guards was using a urinal, police said.

The fugitive was sentenced to nine years in prison in 1991, but was kept there after authorities deemed him "particularly dangerous," police said.

"We hope that the man is caught quickly before something happens," said Reina Blikslager, the head of the Aachen-based prison where the man is serving his sentence.

Police, who have described the man as tall and mustachioed, are advising the public not to speak to the man and immediately call the authorities if he is spotted.
