The populist ANO movement of Czech finance minister, media entreprenuer and billionaire Andrej Babis was the strongest part in 9 out of 13 regions in the country's regional elections on Saturday, election officials reported.
With 99 per cent of the votes counted, ANO collected 21 per cent of the vote, followed by the Social Democrats (CSSD) of Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, with 15.3 per cent. The CSSD won only 2 regions as opposed to 11 in the previous vote.
In the senatorial election, the ANO was also a clear winner. Among others, 14 ANO politicians, 8 social democrats and 8 Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) will head to the run-off elections in one week, thus allowing the governing parties to maintain their majority in the upper house of parliament.
