New video footage of "friendly" Hitler to be used only for research

Recently discovered film footage showing Adolf Hitler's private side, recorded by one of German composer Richard Wagner's relatives, will not be made available to the public, the director of the Bavarian Central Archive told dpa on Thursday.

"One watches the scenes with a certain amount of trepidation," said Sylvia Krauss. "You can see Hitler in a completely different light, not as a statesman. He even comes across as incredibly friendly."

The footage, which shows the Nazi dictator in civilian clothing circa 1936, will be available on CD only for research purposes, she added, in order to protect the privacy rights of one of the people shown.

The still-living sister of the filmmaker, Wolfgang Wagner, can be seen in the footage, preventing its public distribution, Krauss said.

The director of the Wagner opera festival, who is also the famous composer's great-granddaughter, had handed over the estate of her father and previous fest director, Wolfgang, to the archive in 2013.

German newspaper Die Zeit was first to report on the film material.

This year's festival, one of Europe's most prestigious events, began Monday in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth and runs through August.
