Naked artist braces cold to protest Cologne assaults

A German artist stood naked outside Cologne's famed Cathedral on Friday to protest a series of sexual assaults reported there on New Year's Eve.

Dusseldorf-based performance artist Milo Moire braved below-freezing temperatures to condemn the dozens of alleged sex crimes committed against women in an incident that has left the country in shock.

"Respect us! We are not free game, even when we are naked!" her banner said.

Dozens of passersby stopped to watch the 32-year-old artist's protest and police were at the scene but did not take action. Indecent exposure is punishable in Germany.

"I stand for the freedom of movement for women and for the emancipation that has been achieved in the past 50 years," Moire said in an interview with mass circulation newspaper Bild. "These values must not be disrespected."

The news comes after the mass sexual assault and theft committed against women on New Year's Eve prompted a huge debate about sexual violence in German society.

Though police have not established a link between refugees and the sex crimes, politicians and media have voiced concerns about the patriarchal mindset of some immigrants clashing with the sexual and economic freedom enjoyed by women in Germany.
