Munich police close train stations over "concrete" terrorist threat

Munich police warned late on New Year's Eve of a threat of a terrorist attack in the Bavarian state capital.

"We have concrete tips, which we can't sweep under the rug," a spokeswoman said Thursday.

Police evacuated Munich's main train station and a second station in the city's Pasing district in response to what authorities described a credible terrorist threat.

Overnight, no trains were allowed to approach the main station, Germany's second busiest, and the outlying station, police said on Twitter.

"In response to credible reports, Munich police believe that there is a threat of a terrorist attack in the Munich area. According to available information, which we have judged to be credible, an attack is intended to be carried out tonight," police said on Facebook.

Overnight, subway and commuter trains were running in Munich except at the two stations, where both local and passenger rail connections were halted. Due to the late hour into early Friday, few travellers were immediately affected by the hours-long station closures.

Authorities gave no indication when the stations would be reopened or rail traffic restored.
