Merkel wants Britain to remain a member of the European Union

German Chancellor Merkel says she wants Britain to remain a member of the European Union on the eve of an in-out referendum in which the British will decide whether their country should leave the bloc.

Though the German chancellor has stated her commitment to keeping Britain in the bloc, she has remained largely silent in the immediate run-up to Thursday's referendum.

"Of course I hope that Britain will remain in the EU, but that decision is for the citizens of Britain to make," she said Wednesday at a press conference.
