Merkel lauds Hillary Clinton - Donald Trump? "Don't know him"

German chancellor Angela Merkel praised Democratic US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton while giving comparably short shrift to Republican front-runner Donald Trump in an interview to be published Sunday.

"I admire her long political experience, her position on women's rights, families and health care," Merkel told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper according to excerpts released Saturday.

"I admire her strategic thinking and that she is a supporter of the trans-Atlantic partnership," the chancellor said. "Whenever I've worked with Hillary Clinton, it was a great pleasure."

As far as billionaire candidate Trump, Merkel said: "I don't know him personally." In regard to his harsh criticism of her migrant policies, the chancellor said: "I see no reason to respond to him."
