Merkel: Genscher gave millions in communist nations hope for change

German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) praises former foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher as a respected statesman who gave millions in East Germany and other former communist nations hope for change

Merkel acknowledges the decisive role Genscher played "as an unmistakeable voice that gave me as well as millions of people in East Germany and Eastern Europe the hope for change."

"I bow in respect for the lifetime achievements of this great liberal patriot and European," says Merkel after speaking to Genscher's widow, Barbara.
