Maelbeek metro: in the heart of Brussels' European zone

The Maelbeek subway station, one of the locations targeted in Tuesday's terrorist attacks, is in the centre of Brussels' European district.

It is one of the two stations closest to the European Parliament building at Place Leopold.

Along with the Schumann metro station one stop away it also serves politicians, officials and others working in the main European Commission building as well as the European Council headquarters.

Along the Rue de la Loi throughfare, where images showed emergency personnel and onlookers gathering near the metro exits after the attack, are several other European Commission departments.

The street, lined with offices, is also home to organizations not directly connected with European institutions.

Footage from the scene showed parts of Rue de la Loi being closed off after the metro explosion.

All group visits to the European Parliament were cancelled in the wake of the attacks.

Inaugurated in 1969, Maelbeek station is on one of the first lines to be opened in the Belgian capital.
