Lawyer says Paris attacks suspect Abdeslam to sue French prosecution

Salah Abdeslam, a Frenchman thought to have played a key role in the November 13 Paris attacks, plans to take legal action against the French prosecution service for breach of confidentiality, Belgian broadcaster RTBF reported Sunday, citing his lawyer.

French state prosecutor Francois Molins said Saturday that Abdeslam intended to commit a suicide bombing at the French-German football game being played in Stade de France stadium on the night of the attacks, which left 130 people dead.

But the 26-year-old backed down from his plan, Molins said.

Abdeslam is thought to have told Belgian investigators about his plans after he was arrested Friday in a raid at a property in the Molenbeek neighbourhood of Brussels.

However, Abdeslam's defence lawyer, Sven Mary, said that the French prosecutor had no right to disclose the information obtained during questioning, according to the RTBF report.

The suspect has already admitted to being in Paris on November 13, 2015, the night of the coordinated bombings and gun attacks on restaurants, bars, the Stade de France stadium and the Bataclan concert hall, according to a Belga news agency report citing Mary.

Abdeslam, who became one of Europe's most wanted criminals in the wake of the attacks, has been charged with "participating in terrorist murder" and taking part in the activities of a terrorist organization, a statement from the Belgian Federal Public Prosecutor's Office said.

Three terrorists detonated their suicide bomb vests outside the stadium on the night of the attacks after they were unable to enter the venue. The blasts killed one passerby.
