Juncker slams Austria's migrant measures, national border controls

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Thursday criticised Austria's decision to markedly restrict its entry regime for migrants, saying the Commission would examine if such measures were in keeping with European legislation.

I clearly said last month the Commission does not like national border controls and I don't like their introduction, which is happening because we don't have a European approach, Juncker said at a press conference, adding that at today's European Council meeting he would again ask for a European approach to migrants.

Juncker said he did not like Austria's decision and that the Commission would see if it was in line with European legislation, adding that he would have a friendly discussion about it with Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann this afternoon.

He was commenting on Austria's decision as well as on Slovenia's, following Austria's, to tighten measures on its border with Croatia. Austria has announced that as of Friday, it will accept only 80 asylum requests daily on its southern border with Slovenia and that it will let in daily 3,200 persons who say they intend to seek asylum in a neighbouring country.

The Slovenian government said today that it would step up control along the Schengen Area border with Croatia, returning migrants who did not meet entry requirements and did not seek asylum. Interior Minister Vesna Gyorkos Znidar said Slovenia would receive migrants within quotas imposed by Austria.
