Ireland finds two separate Zika infections in adults

Irish health authorities have confirmed two unrelated infections with the Zika virus, saying the two adults are "currently well and fully recovered."

"Both individuals have a history of travel to a Zika-affected country," the Health Service Executive said, adding that "neither case is at risk of pregnancy."

"The finding of Zika cases in Ireland is not an unexpected event as many other European countries have reported cases as a result of travel to affected areas," it said.

On Monday, the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency over the Zika virus, which has mainly affected Brazil and other South American nations.

The WHO has estimated the number of infections at between 500,000 and 1.5 million, saying the wide range reflects the lack of a reliable test to determine whether someone is infected.

Many people do not realize they are infected. Most cases pass relatively harmlessly with a slight temperature, headache, joint pain and skin reddening.

There is no vaccine against Zika.
