Iranian President Hassan Rowhani said Wednesday he found common ground with Pope Francis on the idea that freedom of expression cannot extend to blasphemy and offending religious creeds.
"Freedom does not mean offending what is sacred, what is religious for others, this is wrong from a moral point of view and can set people apart," Rowhani said in a press conference a day after meeting the pope.
"Both of us have condemned these moves, with different languages," Rowhani said.
Rowhani was speaking on the third and last day of his visit to Rome, hours before travelling on to Paris.
The trip is the first official visit by an Iranian leader to Europe in 16 years, and the first since the nuclear deal than ended Tehran's isolation.
